Inside the Bag of a 4 Year Old Girl

Mother and daughter bag

They say you can tell a lot about someone by the bag they carry. And by what’s inside the bag. So what does a 4 year old girl have inside her bag? And what does it say about her?

Essentially, tip out the bag of someone, of anyone, and it gives you a really good idea of their personality. It’s like having a peek into their soul. So, with the express permission of my 4 year old girl, let’s have a delve inside her bag and see what we can find.

But, before we do, I must tell you that it wasn’t easy getting access to this little lady’s bag. Now, it goes without saying that I have no problem sticking my beak inside her bag when she’s not looking. But I didn’t want to put it on the blog and get busted for having a peek. So I felt I should ask.

And ask I did.

Not just once.

I got a resolute ‘no’ on the first ask.

And also the second ask.

In fact, it took no fewer than 7 attempts to get permission to take a look.

If she was trying to pique my interest by playing hard to get, it certainly worked. By now I was desperate to see what treasures this girl had in her bag.

But, before we take a look at what a 4 year old girl has inside her bag, let’s have a look at the bag itself.

Let’s check out its load capacity first

It’s actually very similar to the size of my own ‘Empty Nest Mummy’ handbag. (Have a look here to see what’s in mine).

Big enough to carry life’s essentials without weighing you down too much. Good girl. Clever girl.

Now let’s check out the style of the bag

Like mine, the 4 year old sports a practical but ‘fun’-ctional cross-body style bag. She’s clearly a practical girl, on the move and ready for action.

More practical than mine, her bag is splashproof and easy to wipe clean. As I say, practical and ready for action. For action and spillages.

But what does this 4 year old girl have inside her bag?

Come closer, and let’s have a look.

a peek inside the bag of a 4 year old girl

As I open the zip, I can see it’s rammed full of brightly-coloured goodies.

While nobody’s here to tell me off, let’s tip it out and have a proper rummage.

the contents of the bag of a 4 year old girl

  • Small diary-style notebook
  • Small Peppa Pig figure
  • A plastic play watch
  • A packet of tissues (almost finished)
  • A strip of raffle tickets
  • Carmex lip balm
  • Pretend car keys
  • A pretend phone
  • A little hairbrush
  • A mini magnetic drawing board
  • One small troll, once hairy, now bald

Now, if a 4 year old has it in her precious handbag, it must be something pretty important to her. And I think the contents are quite revealing.

What the contents of the bag reveal about this little girl

Wherever you go in our house, you’ll find a small notebook.

It might contain an original, and slightly odd, fairytale. Or perhaps a list of good children in Reception class. And a list of bad children. Or a list of things that she likes to eat. Or, taking a leaf out of her big brother’s (note)book, it could be a list of football players (the latest in a series of Obsessions of a 6 Year Old Boy).

But, no matter what room, no matter what bag you delve into, you’ll always find a notebook.

The little hairbrush and Carmex lip balm reveal the ever practical side of this very grown up 4 year old girl.

And she does love a lipbalm. At latest count, she has one in her handbag, one in her school book bag, one in the (ssssshhhh) secret pocket of her blazer and one beside her bed. There’s no way this child is going to suffer from chapped lips. Ever.

As for the tissues, these really are an essential for Littlest Angel. She does like to have a little weep sometimes.

…actually, who am I kidding? She likes to have a weep at least once a day. She started school more than half a year ago and still cries for me in the playground most days. (Or cries for me so she can get attention from the bigger kids, particularly the older boy she’s in love with.)

The raffle tickets? You can tell a mum who is heavily involved in PTA stuff when a child counts school raffle tickets as prized possessions. And when she knows what a board sponsorship deal is, aged 4 and three quarters.

So who is this little girl?

She’s a funny little fish, my 4 year old girl. She can be so mature and independent.

She’s so very very grown up in many ways. Sometimes more grown up than me. Actually, often more grown up than me.

And you can see her desire to be a grown-up in the contents of the bag.

You can see it in her handy packet of tissues, her lip balm and her hairbrush. You can see it in her pretend car keys and phone.

But she’s also still very young and dependent on me. Although she’s happy to walk away from me, she always turns back to check that I’m near. And, if she can’t see me, you can see the panic on her little face straight away.

She’s very grown up, but she still needs her little Peppa Pig figurine and her little troll, once hairy, now bald.

And her mummy. She still needs her mummy.

….but that’s ok. Because I still need her too.

(What does your little girl have in her bag? Have a little delve around and let us know in the Comments. Just make sure you get permission first!)

  1. A note pad, three pens, a painted stone we found in a park that she’s refused to re-hide, a ropey purse that’s been through the wash containing 37p, a tiny highland terrier with feeding bowl, a giant hair bow, an old Samsung phone that I used about 10 years ago (minus battery), a three inch nut and bolt she bought from Daddy’s work. This girl is ready for anything!

    1. Wow! That’s quite some haul! And all hugely precious and indispensable, I imagine. It leaves me wondering what colossal sized bag your girl must be dragging around behind her! Thanks for dropping by and do come again.

    1. A very sensible stash of goodies. Clearly she’s a very practical and determined young lady.

  2. Mine doesn’t have a bag yet as she’s only 10 months old, but I dare say I’ll get to enjoy doing something like this in the not so distant future! #TheSatSesh

    1. Top tip: check their handbags frequently. Don’t leave all the foodstuffs and conkers in there to go rotten.

  3. Love this post. I am quite sure their teacher would love a quick glance over the notebooks. I shall warn my middle angel that notes are being kept 😉 #dreamteam

  4. Awww this is such a fab post. I love how you got special permission from your little lady to check out her bag. She seems very prepared for all occasions with her lip balm, tissues and notebook. If I peeked into my little ones bag, I’m pretty sure it would be rammed full of LOL Surprise pets, dolls and lil sisters. Thanks for joining us for the #Dreamteam 🙂

    1. Oh I HAVE to ask permission! Actually, it’s especially an issue with her schoolbag as she has generally made a surprise for me or written me a surprise letter!
